G.R.E.A.T. PROGRAM STARTING
All 7th graders will be participating in The Gang Resistance Education and Training program (G.R.E.A.T.). It is a school-based curriculum that will be instructed by Detective Bork of the Stanhope Police Department. The program will begin Tuesday, October 2nd during 9th period. The primary objective of the G.R.E.A.T. Program is to help youths avoid gang membership, and prevent violence. Communities do not need to have a gang problem to benefit from G.R.E.A.T. The Program’s primary objective is prevention. The curriculum trains students in personal skills, resiliency skills, resistance skills, and social skills. This is accomplished by using a skills-based approach that addresses three domains of learning: cognitive, behavioral, and affective.
The G.R.E.A.T. Program produces attitude and behavioral changes through a unique combination of skills training, cooperative learning, discussion, and role playing. Students are provided many opportunities to model and practice relevant life skills. Once students have rehearsed these skills, they will be more likely to use them in real-life situations. The Program will last 13 weeks. A parent letter will be provided with information about the topics that will be discussed.
The Stanhope Police Department and American Legion will be supplying T-shirts to the students at the completion of the class.

Let's Celebrate "Red Ribbon Week"!
"We "CAN" All Say No to Drugs!"
“Red Ribbon Week” is the oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign in the United States. Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of a drug free America. This year “Red Ribbon Week” will be celebrated at Valley Road School from October 22-26, 2012. Throughout the week Valley Road School will be celebrating with special attire days, pledging to be drug-free, participating in prevention and awareness activities, and we will end the week’s drug prevention campaign with an assembly presented by Officer Joe Johnson!
